Finger Lakes Launches Wavelength Services

Finger Lakes Technologies Group Inc. (FLTG), which operates a private fiber network in upstate New York, has released wavelength services throughout its footprint, capable of offering speeds up to 100Gbps.

Just as frequencies can be multiplexed to create a broadband wireline service, wavelengths can be multiplexed to offer multiple paths through a single fiber strand. Many data streams can then travel over the same pair of fibers by using different colors of light and this means that each individual wavelength services is not locked into a particular protocol. Wavelengths can transport Fast Ethernet (100Mbps), Gigabit Ethernet, Fibre Channel, SONET OC-3, OC-12, OC-48, frame relay and others.

“With dozens of independent wavelengths per fiber-optic core and multiple cores in a cable, the amount of bandwidth available via the FLTG network is incredible,” said Paul Griswold, president and CEO at FLTG.  “And it is this abundance of bandwidth along with our unique footprint and routing that allows us to be ultra-competitive in our pricing.  In addition, because our network is constructed, managed and wholly owned by us, we can install and light fiber extremely quickly. So even if customers have requirements which are near-net rather than on-net, the chances are that we can get you there. And if it’s further away we will also consider building to meet your specific needs.”
