CYBER PATROL remote work and the cloud systems that provided resiliency had been available for years. What changed was the degree of reliance on these components and the strategic shift towards using them for future strategy. This type of shift is a prime driver for new security activity, even without the underlying technology models chang- ing dramatically.” One technology that companies still are heavily relying upon is video conferencing. In April, Zoom’s daily users skyrocketed from 10 million to 300 million, said the company, and the platform emerged as one of the most widely used business communications tools on the market. Yet, more than a dozen security and privacy issues have since been reported on Zoom, which is troubling when considering how many organizations are using the platform at scale. Unfortunately, switching providers won’t necessarily guarantee better security or privacy outcomes, accord- ing to Consumer Reports researcher Bill Fitzgerald. “While there are differences among the privacy policies of the different platforms [from providers like Google, Cisco and Microsoft] on balance, the differences aren’t enormous,” said Fitzgerald. “And from a privacy point of view, none of these options are great.” Partners can help by educating customers about available options, and providing ancillary security services to ensure safe and reliable communications. Of course, video conferencing is just the tip of the iceberg in terms of security and privacy threats facing businesses today. Insecure storage systems or physical endpoints can open the door to a variety of threats, some of which can lay dormant for months or even years before being exposed. It’s possible that we could see a fresh wave of data breaches and security incidents come to light in the coming months from hackers who successfully wormed their way into cloud systems during the pandemic. Making matters more complicated, COVID-19 also has exposed new vulnerabilities to bad actors such as weak home networks and a general lack of cybersecurity awareness and understanding among workers. And as a result, cybercriminals have adjusted their tactics. Many have pivoted away from financial phish- ing strategies and have instead embraced COVID-related email scams. Cybercriminals are now also taking advantage of vulnerable end users using malicious COVID-related domains and ransomware. Skybox Security reported that ransomware samples increased by 72 percent during the first half of the year. “Human error remains the primary component of most security breaches, and the level of knowledge needed Flexible plans, smart shared data usage.
