CYBER PATROL Despite these issues, Paunet believes that VPNs are still a viable security option for SMBs heading into 2021. However, they should be combined with additional technologies. “VPN will always be a foundational piece of any SMBs network security stack well into 2021 and beyond,” Paunet continued. “In addition to a VPN solution, SMBs should adopt a multi- layered network security solution, one that partners their VPN solution with directory access and maintenance, and an integrated endpoint security. With devices outside of the office, they can easily become vulnerable access points for cybercriminals. Extending VPN security with endpoint security ensures that their security is twofold.” Paunet also offered some ways that partners can best prepare SMB customers for VPN migrations, and help to reduce risks. For example, Paunet recommended conducting VPN audits periodically throughout the year. “During these audits, a larger-than- normal segment of employees can be asked to work from home or remotely and connect to the network via VPN,” Paunet explained. “IT teams can then test the connectivity of their VPN clients and address any bandwidth issues.” Consistent employee training, Paunet said, is also critical for success. “Partners can work with SMBs to prepare for future VPN migrations by taking the time to conduct consistent employee training,” Paunet continued. “This training should emphasize the importance of connecting to the network via VPN when an employee is working from home or a local coffee shop, and should also emphasize the importance of password maintenance while working away from the office.” IAM: A Critical Remote Enabler Another area of concern that partners should discuss with customers is identity access management (IAM). In a study from LastPass and IDG, 98 percent of organizations depend on IAM solutions including single sign-on, multi- factor authentication (MFA) and password management to keep their business secure in the work-from-anywhere era. And an overwhelming 96 percent of IT decision makers said that remote work has impacted their IAM strategy, forcing them to adjust their policies to enable secure work from anywhere. It’s worth exploring how customers are using IAM and making sure that they have the right technologies and safeguards in place to protect human and non-human identities. Partners should also remind customers about the importance of building custom IAM strategies based on their unique requirements. o 39 September - October, 2020 | CHANNEL VISION FIRSTCOMM + WHOLESALE = A RECIPE FOR SUCCESS FirstComm’s newWhite-label “as-a-service” solutions include a robust suite of communication tools that help drive business more efficiently, while also offering competitive pricing, dynamic feature sets, and countless opportunities to increase ROI and profitability.
