efficiency (named by 69 percent of the respondents) and greater agility (66 percent) – both enabled by SD-WAN’s centralized management and software-controlled functions – along with enhanced security (65 percent). Cost savings were cited by just more than half (51 percent) of the respon- dents. Cost savings ranked below efficiency and security benefits in past surveys as well, noted IDG, reflect - ing the increasing importance of other benefits over cost savings. Enhanced Security As was the case in 2019, security remains the number one consideration when making an SD-WAN purchase decision, and in 2020, when the attack surface expanded due to remote working, security was on top by a wide margin. A full 70 percent said security was “very important” when purchas- ing SD-WAN services, compared to 54 percent who said the same about staffing considerations, which came in second. An overwhelming 91 percent of the respondents expressed inter- est in services that converge WAN and security — also known as secure access service edge (SASE) solutions. Staffing considerations, for their part, began rising in the ranks of importance in the 2019 survey, said IDG, but a second place finish in 2020 was its highest position yet. Here again is an area where managed options can relieve some pain. “Staffing and security go hand in hand,” said the report. Much like the manual work of network performance management, firewalls also require threat monitoring and response performed by security analysts.
