But there is also a rising human cost to cybercrime, with inbound and outbound threats increasingly impacting employees’ mental health and wellbeing. Workers today are on the front lines with email security and tasked with quickly vetting incoming messages. All it takes is one mistake to cause a cybersecurity incident that impacts the entire organization. This threat becomes amplified in fast-paced, deadline-driven environments where employees must deal with large volumes of daily messages. For example, workers involved with processes such as manpower and invoicing don’t always have the time or resources to manually scour emails for signs of fraud. When given the chance, most workers choose speed and efficiency over security, which can lead to costly mistakes. Unfortunately, business leaders often take corrective action when workers slip up with email security. In fact, Egress, in its latest Email Security Risk report, found that in 74 percent of organizations that experienced phishing attacks, the employees involved were either disciplined, dismissed or voluntarily left. Discipline was the most common outcome, occurring in 51 percent of cases.
