62 CHANNELVISION | SEPTEMBER - OCTOBER 2023 STIR/SHAKEN Shake Up? Earlier this year, Unified Office CEO Ray Pasquale began to receive complaints from customers that their calls were being labeled as potential spam or the customer’s name had been replaced with other labels, such as the city and state associated with the calling telephone number. As a result, calls were not being answered, creating distrust in the public switched telephone network (PSTN), which is antithetical to the spirit and intent of the FCC’s “robo calling mitigation” efforts in the “STIR/ SHAKEN” mandate, which is a suite of protocols and procedures issued by the FCC intended to combat caller ID spoofing on public telephone networks. The practice of spoofing caller ID information, which has become prevalent in the last year, has created consternation for service provider customers that rely on this service to engage with their customers. It also may inhibit effective public safety interventions and critical doctor/pharmacy/patient interactions. However, some third parties also see the practice as a business opportunity.
