Edge and internet of things (IoT) are a couple of mega-trends but with many issues to solve. According to an annual IoT survey from Mobile Europe & European Communica- tions, the biggest roadblock for IoT acceptance is a lack of business models and feasi- ble use cases. All the while, research published in November by TM Forum, a global industry association for telecom service providers and their suppliers, found many operator respondents were unsure if they will pursue an edge strategy, and most cite a lack of use cases as the reason for their inactivity. COVID-Killing Robots Global robotics and AI company UBTECH is working with the Chris- tina School District in Wilmington, Del., on a pilot program that placed its ADIBOT system, which protects from COVID-19 by disinfecting the air and surfaces, into two Delaware public schools. A single ADIBOT robot reportedly can disinfect 99.9% of coronaviruses in a 900-square foot room in under four minutes. The goal of the pilot was to measure cost efficiency, disinfection rates and gather feedback from maintenance/ custodial staff. ADIBOT’s technology is being offered by UBTECH at a significantly lower cost and on a deferred payment basis to ensure the budget crisis is not further exacerbated.
