About 71 percent of enterprises are gathering data for IoT initiatives today. IT-centric projects are the dominant IoT use cases, particularly datacenter management and surveil- lance and security monitoring. Two years out, however, facilities automa- tion will likely be the most popular use case, and line-of-business-centric supply chain management is expected to jump from No. 6 to No. 3. IoT-specific projects can include data collection and analysis of finan- cial, healthcare or industrial functions; the uptime/reliability of mission-critical line of business servers and applica- tions; and monitoring the efficiency and costs related to a specific busi- ness operation or department such as a hospital emergency room. About 68 percent of corporations currently take advantage of IoT data to optimize operations, such as per- forming preventative maintenance, re- ducing downtime in factory equipment and fleet management. In addition, 42 percent of enterprises use IoT data to develop new products or enhance ex- isting products and services. For one-half of respondents, se- curity is the top impediment to IoT deployments, followed closely by 41 percent who cite IoT’s lack of per- ceived return on investment (ROI) and benefits.
