3 I want to extend to you a hearty welcome to WISPAMERICA OKC. We’re honored you’re here and are determined to deliver outstanding value during this busy and productive week. Broadband makes our lives better. And, as you well know, the market is exploding. Fixed wireless, fiber, satellite, cable – all working 24/7/366(!) to keep up with America’s ceaseless demand. WISPAMERICA celebrates this growth and vibrance, bringing together more than 1,200 of us to learn the latest technical and business practices, get up-to-speed on new regulations, experience state-of-the-art broadband tech and tools, and network with our colleagues from across the country – all in a warm atmosphere in the heartland of America. Broadway debuted the musical Oklahoma!, “where the wind comes sweepin’ down the plain,” to recordsetting 2,200-plus audiences beginning in March, 1943 – a time when America was facing serious headwinds. (In 1953, it became Oklahoma’s state song.) We’ve all swept into town to meet again, to enjoy the camaraderie of our evolving WISP community and to herald the sweeping, life-bettering changes our tremendous industry brings to America. Of course, we’re seeing some headwinds, too: BEAD’s complex design and technological focus may leave many Americans offline, while needlessly overbuilding networks that already serve customers with great broadband; the FCC has proposed a number of new regulations which could affect how providers run their businesses and deploy broadband; the economy may still limit affordable access to necessary capital; and the need for good labor, which is already tight, will likely increase, with the flood of new deployment funding coming to the states. Yet “the breeze is so busy it don’t miss a tree.” On top of your hard work across our marketplace, Washington D.C. and the states have made some real progress to address the digital divide. Soon, billions of BEAD dollars will pour into our local communities to fund more broadband deployment and adoption. Today, almost two years after the BEAD program was announced, through the hard work and united voice of the WISP industry, many federal and state policymakers now recognize the primary goal of that program is to get all online, not to impose a single technological solution to address the challenge. Consequently, more and more of them are working to boost choice, calling for solutions such as unlicensed fixed wireless to ensure the program’s success. Further, the process itself is becoming more accommodating to small businesses, which will only improve BEAD. You’re in the right place to find the right tools to meet whatever weather lies ahead. WISPAMERICA is privileged to host our great WISP community of operators, vendors, service providers, advisors, and innovators, all gathered to help you scale, find new opportunities, improve your competitive differentiation and deliver reliable broadband to your customers. So, enjoy. Learn. Share. And visit our sponsors and exhibitors, too! They play a huge role in making this event happen and are committed to your success. Have a great week, all! And remember, as our host state’s license plates once read, “Oklahoma is OK!” Warmest regards, David Zumwalt President & CEO WISPA – Broadband Without Boundaries Welcome to WISPAMERICA 2024 David M.
