Several new initiatives have been launched to the benefit of WISPA members and some old battles continue to be fought. But throughout the new and the old, “This is a great time to be a WISP,” said Aiken, speaking at yesterday’s State of WISPA presentation. The audience seemed to agree, with the vast majority raising their hands when asked who was optimistic about the future and who believed their businesses would be able to take advan- tage of new opportunities and new markets in the near term. Already, WISPs around the country now service an estimated 6 million people in the U.S., up from about 4 million just a few years ago. The growth is expected to continue as broadband only becomes more embedded in our culture, said Aiken. All the while, policymakers in Washington D.C., main- stream media members and the major service providers are beginning to understand the possi- bilities of fixed wireless and the role WISPs play in closing the digital divide, and they are looking to WISPs as innovators of the technology. “Fixed wireless is now sexy,” said Aiken, who pledged to continue efforts to “raise the profile” of the WISP industry and fixed wireless, while telling WISPs’ collective stories. ‘A Spectrum of Possibilities’ for WISPA Members L Z OO 2019 (Continued on page 4) Aiken updates members on the “State of WISPA.” Photo by Aaron Cooper, Aarons Studio Photography
