As the number of connected devices continues to rise and the consumption of bandwidth-heavy applications and content becomes more prevalent, WISPs need innovative solutions to effectively manage their networks and ensure seamless connectivity for their customers. One solution that has gained significant popularity in recent years is virtual broadband network gateways (vBNGs). But what exactly are vBNGs? The primary role of a vBNG is to handle the network traffic between the WISP and its customers. As the backbone of the network infrastructure, vBNGs are crucial in ensuring reliable and high-speed internet connectivity for ISPs. They act as a bridge between the WISP’s edge network and the diverse range of customer devices, enabling seamless data transmission and optimized network performance. Now, let’s take a closer look at some of the key features and benefits of vBNGs: Scalability: vBNGs can quickly scale to handle increasing network traffic without requiring significant hardware investments. This scalability is crucial for WISPs as they continue to experience exponential growth in data consumption. Flexibility: As software-based solutions, vBNGs offer greater flexibility in terms of deployment and configuration. WISPs can easily adapt and customize the vBNGs to meet their specific network requirements without the limitations imposed by traditional hardware-based gateways. Cost Savings: vBNGs can significantly reduce operational costs for WISPs by replacing traditional hardware-based gateways. The virtualized nature of vBNGs eliminates the need for expensive hardware investments and allows for more efficient resource utilization, resulting in cost savings that can be passed on to customers. As the demand for high-speed internet continues to grow, vBNGs have emerged as a vital component in WISPs’ network infrastructures. Their ability to efficiently handle network traffic, offer advanced features and provide cost-effective solutions makes them indispensable tools for WISPs striving to deliver exceptional internet services to their customers. Another technology that can play a crucial role in enhancing WISP growth is carriergrade network address translation (CGNAT). CGNAT services are designed to address the growing scarcity of IPv4 addresses by allowing WISPs to serve a larger customer base using a limited number of public IP addresses. When a customer initiates a connection to the internet, their private IP address is translated to a public IP address within the WISP’s CGNAT pool. This translation process enables multiple subscribers to share the same public IP address while ensuring their individual network sessions remain separate and secure. CGNAT also protects against network-based attacks by hiding the customer’s private IP address from potential attackers on the public Internet. Moreover, CGNAT services employ advanced algorithms to allocate public IP addresses to customers dynamically. This ensures efficient utilization of the limited IP address pool, allowing ISPs to serve a larger customer base without compromising network performance. netElastic developed one of the first software-based BNGs and has been a leader ever since. netElatic’s high-performance virtual BNG delivers up to 1 Terabit of throughput and easily scales up to 128,000 subscribers. Buying IPv4 addresses on the open market is expensive, given their limited supply. netElastic CGNAT enables ISPs to conserve IPv4 addresses while transitioning to IPv6, and netElastic’s software-based CGNAT eliminates the high costs associated with more traditional CGNAT products. m Visit netElastic at WISPAPALOOZA booth #731.
