Whether it is a result of government incentives or pressure from the market, many WISPs have begun to realize that investing in fiber is key to the future of their business. To that end, they need a solution that can allow them to modulate down from high-bandwidth XGS-PON networks originating in their backhaul and/or central office to lower bandwidth GPON in their end user access networks. In this way, they can serve many GPON customers with a single XGS-PON OLT. A separate but related concern arises when customers begin to upgrade their fiber access from GPON to XGS-PON. While in theory this would require separate OLTs to service GPON and XGS-PON customers, this can be bypassed by using Combo PON (CPON). However, while a single CPON OLT can provide access to both GPON and XGS-PON ONUs (at the customer premises), this is an expensive alternative. Therefore, Ethernity Networks is introducing its Two-Tier PON Solution, which enables hierarchical PON, with a fluid transition between XGS-PON and GPON. The solution uses two of Ethernity’s PON devices: the UEP3808 OLT and an OIU (Optical Interworking Unit) that incorporates Ethernity’s Single-Port PON OLT MAC Device. The OIU contains an XGS-PON ONU along with a GPON OLT to provide seamless modulation from XGS-PON to GPON. UEP3808 is a nextgeneration disaggregated white box OLT that can be programmed with XGS-PON, GPON, CPON, or a combination thereof. UEP3808 can be integrated with complete software or used as a white box for integration with SDN virtual OLT software. The flexibility inherent in this approach allows WISPs and telecom operators to pace their own developments and extend them to their access networks without waiting for lengthy standardizations by international entities or for the vendor to fit new customized or proprietary feature requests into tight software roadmaps.
