Core Communications Use among business users and IT departments has been encouraged by improving chat applica- tions that work across multiple operating systems and devices, as well as the fact that some of these collaborative chat apps offer functionality that email often doesn’t, including chat rooms, video confer- encing, social features and more.  In 2016, 42 percent of small businesses (1 to 99 employees), 38 percent of mid-sized companies (100 to 499 employees) and 53 percent of large businesses (500+ employees) were using collab- orative chat apps. Now in 2018, these numbers have increased to 58 percent of small businesses, 61 percent of mid-sized companies, and 70 percent of large businesses. (Email, of course, still holds the top spot among workplace communication tools with 99 percent usage.) Along with growth in usage among chat apps, there has been some shuffling among the top brands used. When Spiceworks surveyed the landscape back in 2016, Skype for Business held the top spot in the workplace, followed by Google Talking BusinessChatApps R eal-time chats applications have quickly become a core means of communications within businesses and enterprises, suggests a new survey by Spiceworks, and the larger the company, the more likely its employees are to utilize such apps.
