A Dedicated ResponseTeam If you’re going to exercise a de- monstrable commitment to cybersecu- rity, you need to do more than provide technical support to your clients. You need to have a well-trained team of experts on-call to tackle immediate threats to your systems and data. This team also will be responsible for en- suring your products are as secure as possible and helping clients through any security and implementation chal- lenges that they may encounter. Compliance with Regulations My stance on the General Data Protection Regulation is that everyone should follow it, even vendors that aren’t based in the European Union. Not only is it a powerful indicator of a strong security posture, but it also serves as an excellent framework for proper data hygiene. Adherence to the GDPR alongside any data protection laws that exist within your own country will signify to your clients that you treat their data – and the data of their customers – with the utmost care. Compliance aside, it is also worthwhile to seek industry certifica- tions from trusted authorities such as the Forum of Incident Response and Security Teams (FIRST). You should also conduct regular third- party security assessments to ensure you catch any blind spots your own security team has missed. Ideally, you’ll want to build a pool of several trusted partners you can work with to keep your security to as high a standard as possible. Secure Development Life Cycle Last but certainly not least, I’d advise building security into every stage of your development lifecycle. Tap into security testing frameworks such as those created by Microsoft and McAfee and ap- ply those to your portfolio in its entirety. I would also recommend regularly carrying out mock attacks on your own infrastructure. It’s also important that you have a vulnerability management process in place. No system is fully secure, no matter how much work you put into it. Establish regular security aware- ness training, follow MITRE’s Common Vulnerability and Exposure standard, monitor the latest tactics and trends appearing in the news and have a clear process for vulnerability disclosure. The cybersecurity landscape is more volatile than it’s ever been. That’s true regardless of the industry in which you work. As a vendor, you have a duty of care to your clients to be cognizant of that fact – and to do what’s necessary to keep everyone’s systems and data safe. o Tim Mullahy is the executive vice president and managing director at Liberty Center One, a data center located in Royal Oak, Mich.
