Cyber Patrol While this threat is still emerging, and is most likely still a few years away, the topic was serious enough to warrant a cautionary joint report from a coalition that included researchers from Yale, Oxford and Cambridge University, among other high profile technology groups. The report starts by lauding the numerous benefits of AI and machine learning. “These technologies have many widely beneficial applications, ranging from machine translation to medical image analysis,” reads the report. “Countless more such applications are being developed and can be expected over the long term.” It also issues a stark warning, though, mentioning that less attention has been paid to the ways that artificial intelligence can be used maliciously. As AI capabilities become more powerful and widespread, the report continues, the threat landscape will change in several ways. Looking forward, we can expect to see the expansion of existing threats, the in- troduction of new threats leveraging AI systems and a change to the typical character of threats. Threats, in other words, will be- come even more effective, more finely targeted and harder to attribute.
