According to Cisco, organiza- tions that are prepared for GDPR are benefitting from privacy investments beyond merely being compliant. For example, companies that are ready for GDPR are experiencing shorter delays in their sales cycles. GDPR- ready organizations, Cisco says, have also experienced fewer data breaches. Further, where breaches have occurred, fewer records have been impacted. These companies have experienced reduced system downtime and have fared better fi- nancially following breaches. “We are already beginning to see the positive effects of the new rules,” the EU echoed in a January state- ment. “Citizens have become more conscious of the importance of data protection and of their rights. And they are now exercising these rights, as national Data Protection Authori- ties see in their daily work. They have by now received more than 95,000 complaints from citizens.” Multinational law firm DLA Piper, meanwhile, reports that there were more than 59,000 disclosed data breaches between May 25, 2018 and January 28, 2019. The Netherlands, Germany and the U.K. were together responsible for about two-thirds of data breach disclosures, with 15,400, 12,600 and 10,600 respective disclosures during that time period.
