KPI’s, etc. This was leadership, or so I had thought. I didn’t realize at that point, that leadership was so much more than just a title; and in order to be viewed and valued as a leader, by both my organization and those that I was leading, it was something that would have to be built over time. As I continued my journey, I re- ceived my first promotion to sales man- ager. I was still under the misconcep- tion that because of my title I automati- cally would receive respect and trust; after all, now I was the manager. The reality was, I was just starting down the path to earning these. All I still had was a title, and my journey to leader- ship was still very much in its infancy. Respect and trust must be earned – and not just once but over and over again. The people you lead will con- stantly refine their outlook on who you are as their leader and whether you deserve their respect and trust. The unfortunate reality for a leader is one misstep can eliminate the respect and trust you have earned from the people you lead. Leadership requires trust and respect not that is demanded by the leader but that is freely given to the leader. This level of leadership is earned by the experi- ences of the people you lead. These experiences of the people you lead create results, positive or negative, in whatever field that you operate in. Depending upon those actions and the ultimate outcome of a situ- ation, trust and respect is earned or lost by a leader. These experiences, and more so the ones with positive outcomes, are crucial in a leader’s development as the trusted and re- spected leader. An area that I have found builds tremendous respect and trust as a leader is being accountable for the blame and always leaving the praise and success for the people you lead. Once you earn your team’s trust and respect you move up one rung on the leadership ladder and you can begin to build a culture, however, never forgetting that sliding back down can happen at any time if you aren’t mind- ful of the actions you are taking as a leader. Trust and respect are lost much faster than earned. The next step in leadership is de- veloping the culture that you want for your team. In my experience I wanted to develop a culture of positive growth. In positive growth, I don’t mean strictly in terms of revenue and customer growth. These are goals for a com- pany, not for a person. I have always wanted to see positive growth in each of my individual team members. Each person on your team has some po- tential, and you, as their leader, are responsible for developing and culti- vating that potential. By developing and exploiting the strengths of each individual team member, you build an all-around strong team which is poised for success. Having a strong team, that believes in and has trust and respect for its leader, can only attain success, and that success is guided and driven by the vision of the leader. channel management The Lowest Connectivity Rates in the Industry Choice Business Connections Inc.
