EMERGENT By 2023, there will be more than three times the number of networked devices on Earth than humans, accord - ing to Cisco’s latest Annual Internet Report analysis and forecast. About half of the global connections will be machine-to-machine connections, Cisco said, and the M2M space will be domi - nated by consumer-oriented “things” in smart homes and automobiles. Cisco predicts that by 2023, there will be 5.3 billion total internet users (66 percent of global population) up from 3.9 billion (51 percent of global popula - tion) in 2018. Those numbers, how - ever, will be dwarfed by the number of overall connected devices: 29.3 billion networked devices by 2023, compared to 18.4 billion in 2018. The number of devices per person is expected to rise from 2.4 networked devices per capita in 2018 to 3.6 devices by 2023. M2M connections will be the fastest- growing device and connections cat - egory, growing nearly 2.4-fold during the forecast period (19 percent CAGR) to 14.7 billion connections by 2023. Smartphones will grow the second fast - est, at a 7 percent CAGR (increasing by a factor of 1.4). Connected enter - tainment devices (TVs, set-top boxes, gaming consoles, etc.) will grow next fastest, at a little less than a 6 percent CAGR, to 3.2 billion by 2023. PCs will continue to decline (2.3 percent de - cline) during the forecast period, but there will be more PCs than tablets throughout the forecast period and by the end of 2023 (1.2 billion PCs vs. 840 million tablets), said Cisco. By 2023, the consumer share of the total devices, including both fixed and mobile devices, will be 74 percent, with business claiming the remaining 26 percent. Consumer share will grow at a slightly slower rate, at a 9.1 percent CAGR relative to the business segment, which will grow at a 12.0 percent CAGR. In North America, there will be 5 billion networked devices/connections by 2023, up from 3 billion in 2018, said Cisco. A quarter of those 5 billion networked devices/connections will mobile-connected, while 75 percent will be wired or connected over Wi-Fi. North America’s average mobile con - nection speed will reach 58.4 Mbps by 2023, which represents 2.7-fold growth from 2018 (21.6 Mbps). Also by 2023, North America’s average Wi-Fi speeds from mobile devices will reach 110 Mbps, which represents 2.3-fold growth from 2018 (46.9 Mbps). North America is expected to host about 345 million internet users by 2023. Cisco: Connected Devices 3x Global Population by 2023 Atera Unveils Data Science-Based Tool Atera, developer of the data sci - ence-based IT automation platform that combines remote monitoring and management (RMM), profes - sional services automation (PSA), and remote access into one solution, announced “groundbreaking” network discovery technology that scans the network across each device, collects data and analyzes the viable busi - ness opportunities in an actionable format. The auto-generated business opportunities created for Atera’s thousands of MSP partners world - wide produce an average of $89,000 in recurring revenue opportunities per MSP, said the company. According to the company, the Atera Network Discovery tool continu - ously scans the network and auto - matically extracts the list of business opportunities and tasks for the MSP. It provides network reports and insights on client networks, enabling MSPs to hold periodic business reviews, and identifies any unsecured components and configurations that might be vul - nerable to a potential security breach. Partners receive alerts to any business opportunities within a specific network. “Our new innovation unlocks in - credible business opportunities for MSPs,” explained Gil Pekelman, CEO at Atera. “When you activate Atera Network Discovery, it immediately goes to work to create new streams of recurring revenue. At the same time, it saves the MSP time and money because the technology scans the net - work automatically and continuously without having to add extra headcount. The first of its kind technology is dis - ruptive in the market, providing MSPs with more upsell opportunities to gain the competitive edge.” *NetCo privately held after separation, so no market valuation available Source: McKinsey & Company * Figures (n) refer to 2018, 2023 device share Billions of Global Connected Devices Source: Cisco IT Channel Firms Experimenting r Currently Offering Emerging Tech Source: CompTIA Incidence of partnering with new players Jan 2015 Jun 2015 Jun 2016 Jun 2017 Jun 2018 Jun 2019 2012 2015 2016 2017 2018 2018 35 30 25 20 15 10 5 0 2019 2020 2021 2022 2023 Other (2.1%,3.9%) Tablets (4%,3%) PCs (7%,4%) TVs (13%,11%) Non-Smartphones (13%,5%) Smartphones (27%,23%) M2M (33%, 50%) IoT software IoT hardware Virtua reality Al 5G 3D printing Blockchain AR Robotics Drone hardware Drone software Biometrics 2019 2018 51% 50% 45% 40% 37% 32% 28% 27% 27% 26% 25% 23% 48% 43% 37% 42% 20% 23% 34% 27% 20% 25% 23% 24% Yes, frequently Yes, occasionally No, but we are planning to soon 30% 20% 45% 42% 17% 22% 8 CHANNEL VISION | March - April, 2020
