VIRTUAL REALITY “The benefits of private connectivity include enhanced security, resilience, faster performance, and a better experi- ence for employees and customers,” Colt executives said. “This option pro - vides secure and reliable private net- work connections between data centers or office locations and major providers.” Respondents were also asked which functions have already been moved to the cloud, with the majority indicating data management (84 per - cent), customer relationship man- agement (63 percent) and enterprise resource planning (57 percent). Additional responses included employ- ee communications (46 percent) and contact center (42 percent). It’s possible that we could see an even larger spike in contact center migrations later this year, too, as more companies abandon on-premises systems in favor of agile cloud platforms that can be managed and accessed from any location. In terms of the timescale of migra - tion projects, survey responses suggest the migration of critical applications is a high priority among IT leaders. Certainly, plans may have changed once lockdowns took full affect, but there is at least intent to migrate rather swiftly as normalcy returns. As of February 2020, at least, 14 percent of respon - dents said they were looking to migrate a system immediately – within three months. An ad- ditional third of IT leaders will be looking to take on a project within the next six months. “This speaks to a growing desire to keep moving towards their goal and to keep planning timelines to a minimum, even within larger organizations,” said Colt executives. What’s more, the majority of respondents (86 percent) will be looking to embrace another migration project within the next 12 months. “This clearly shows the con - tinued tectonic shift towards the processing of data and the delivery of critical services by the cloud,” they continued. Only a very small percentage (5 percent) will wait more than two years before looking to migrate another sys- tem. This could be due to a range of reasons, said Colt executives, includ- ing lack of funding, lack of resources or lack of stakeholder decisions. “Generally speaking, momentum is kept and many businesses will ap- proach a staggered rollout with the next project always in sight,” said the research report. The time it takes to roll out a typical cloud migration project varies greatly from company to company, suggest the findings. While the majority of those that have migrated completed a project in three months to a year, almost a third of businesses (30 percent) stated it took six to nine months for a typical project, with 26 percent taking longer at nine to 12 months, and 19 percent of businesses taking as little as three to six months. One in 10 companies, meanwhile took 12 to 24 months, while a small pro - portion experienced delays taking them two to three years or three-plus years (6 percent and 3 percent respectively). Overall, three-quarters of busi- nesses took more than six months to complete a migration project, indicat- ing either the scale of these projects or that a lot can be done to streamline them, concluded Colt executives. o Source: J.D.
