Whether it is necessary or not, businesses will be looking to offer workers “safe” and germ-contained environments as offices are re- populated in the second half of 2020. AT&T, for one, is working with UV- technology-based provider Xenex to power a robot that helps disinfect hospitals. The LightStrike Germ- Zapping Robots use intense pulsed xenon ultraviolet (UV) light that deac- tivates viruses, bacteria and spores on surfaces, said the company. “IoT connectivity can play a criti - cal role in healthcare, and that’s never been more apparent than during the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Chris Pen - rose, senior vice president of advanced solutions at AT&T. “Through a single cloud-based platform, we can deliver visibility and agility – allowing XENEX the ability to dynamically adapt to a changing business.” Trade association CompTIA re - cently announced that 13 influential business leaders will serve as execu- tive council members for its Emerg- ing Technology Community in 2020. The CompTIA Emerging Technology Community identifies and promotes business opportunities in innovations such as artificial intelligence, block - chain, drones, the internet of things, 5G wireless technology and more, said the group. The community has more than 700 members representing a range of organizations involved in the business of technology. Michael Haines, director partner in- centives at Microsoft, continues in his role as chairman of the community’s executive council. Returning as vice chair is Maddy Martin, head of growth and education for Smith.ai. Three executives join the coun - cil for the first time. They are Jeff Benedetti, vice president for sale and marketing, Skout Cyber Security; Matt Dukowski, senior manager, product management, SYNNEX Canada; and James Saldanha, client executive, Tech Data Canada. Returning council members include Ted Cole, vice president of channels and strategic partners, GPS Insight; Paul Cronin, CEO, Apogee IT Services; Steven Estabrooks, general manager, Captec Americas Inc.; Frank Raimondi, chief consultant, Strategic Channel Concepts, Ltd.; John Rice, president, Think Channel, LLC; and Dave Sobel, host of the Business of Tech podcast. The CompTIA Emerging Technol - ogy Community leverages the col- lective expertise and wisdom of its members to help businesses navigate the complex terrain of emerging solu- tions by identifying the most impactful near-term technologies and how they can be profitably leveraged in their business, said CompTIA. Although it is a vertical that hasn’t always been known for big chunk of IT spending, IoT is expected to sky - rocket within the manufacturing sec- tor during the next five to 10 years. According to ABI Research forecast, the industrial IoT market will grow from $59 billion in 2019 to $375 bil - lion in 2030 (excluding hardware rev- enues). Throw in hardware and the figure jumps to $1.04 trillion. The leading non-hardware revenue segments by 2030, said ABI, include asset tracking and human machine interface (HMI)/industrial PCs. A new report from Juniper Res arch found that the number of hearables in-use (ear based wearable devices that provide additional on-device functions) will grow to more than 970 million by 2024.
