DAY 2 2018 L Z OO A s former WISPA chairman Chuck Hogg put it during the introduction of his successor, Tuesday’s State of WISPA address in the Amazon Ballroom was in many ways a “public passing of the torch” to new WISPA President and CEO Claude Aiken. Last year, the WISPA board decided that the last piece to a transformation strategy that began in 2014 was to bring in professional leadership. Quite simply, the demands on the volun- teer board – particularly those overseeing efforts in Washington D.C. – were too over- whelming and the stakes too high for the association to be led on a part-time basis (notwithstanding, of course, the dedicated and savvy team of professionals currently employed by the organization.) A search team was gathered and search firm hired, leading to several interviews with an impressive group of candidates. “In the end, one person stood head and shoul- ders above the rest, and that was Claude Aiken,” said Hogg, introducing WISPA’s new President and CEO to the stage. Aiken comes to WISPA after about 10 years working at the Federal Communi- cations Commission in various staff and leadership positions, where he was steeped in communications policy and an under- standing of the need for rural broadband.
