Cyber Patrol Amid a massive 62 percent increase in overall malware detections compared to the fourth quarter of 2018, WatchGuard Technolo- gies’ most recent internet security report found that cyber criminals are leveraging a wide array of varied attack techniques, including malicious Microsoft Office documents, Mac malware and web application exploits. Attackers continue to favor malicious Of- fice documents, as more than 17 percent of Fireboxes blocked malicious Office documents in the first quarter of 2019. However, Mac OS malware is on the rise, showed the report. Mac malware first appeared on WatchGuard’s top 10 malware list in the third quarter of 2018, and now two variants have become prevalent enough to make the list in Q1 2019. This in- crease in Mac-based malware further debunks the myth that Macs are immune to viruses and malware and reinforces the importance of advanced threat protection for all devices and systems, said WatchGuard. Research Shows Surge in Mac Malware Employees Under Attack A staggering 67% of all highly targeted attacks are carried out against “lower-level employees” such as customer service representatives, according to research from Sophos. Perhaps of even more concern, 40% of attacks come by way of “contributors,” which includes outside contractors and freelancers.
