Software developer and

system integrator Arkados has

partnered with SparkFund to

offer commercial and indus-

trial facilities a subscription

model for energy conservation

services. One monthly pay-

ment covers installation, re-

pairs, monitoring and ongoing

services. The Arktic Energy

Measurement

and Verification

(EM&V) plat-

form is designed

to enable the

implementation

of multiple types

of sensors, such

as temperature,

humidity, light,

energy and wa-

ter consumption,

motion and oc-

cupancy, indoor

air quality and

noise, that can

gather informa-

tion throughout

a building or

complex. The

application can

provide for initial benchmark-

ing to determine the unique

building signature and be used

for continuous monitoring to

yield insights that may not oth-

erwise be evident.

“In nearly every case, cus-

tomers can experience all of the

benefits of these efficiency im-

provements and automation with

no upfront costs and use the sav-

ings to offset the entire subscrip-

tion fee and still net a cost reduc-

tion,” said Terrence DeFranco,

CEO of Arkados Group.

To help prove the cost,

EM&V provides verification of

energy savings with granular,

real-time data gathering, as well

as insights into additional ways

to reduce energy consumption.

“The revolutionary aspect

of this partnership for Arkados

is our ability to continue de-

livering new applications over

time to our customers with this

model, giving them flexibility,

scalability and protection from

obsolescence as their needs

evolve,” said DeFranco.

2016 Slip in

Outsourced DR

Many IT organizations see the value in disaster

recovery outsourcing, say researchers at Comput-

er Economics. However, the percentage of organi-

zations outsourcing this function dropped in 2016

after staying relatively static from 2012-2014 and

seeing a bump in 2015. Could it be some of 2016’s

spending came at the end of 2015?

Nonetheless, Computer Economics analysts

are still bullish on the market, and particularly on

disaster recovery as a service. The research firms

points to rapid growth in DRaaS during the past

two years. So far, some pretty big names lead

the market: Amazon, Hewlett Packard Enterprise,

IBM, Microsoft, Verizon, VMware, as well as

scores of smaller providers.

Overall, Computer Economics findings sug-

ggest the outsourcing level is very high, meaning

that when organizations outsource disaster recov-

ery, they often outsource most or all of it.

“Preparing for every eventuality can often

require additional expertise and resources, and

getting help is often useful,” said Tom Dunlap,

research director for Computer Economics.

can lead to reduced energy consumption

and maintenance costs of as much

as 60 percent.
