DAY 1

G

reat Plains Communications, a large

independently owned telecommunica-

tions, last- and middle-mile provider in

Nebraska, has completed an extensive

land and underwater boring project that expands

its 5,000-mile Nebraska fiber network into

South Dakota.

The project also permits Grain Plains Commu-

nications to extend services into Minnesota and

expand the network to allow Great Plains Commu-

nications to offer capacity to carriers, services to

South Dakota- and Minnesota-based customers and

will provide Nebraska-based customers the ability

to reach these new markets.

The project took place at the Nebraska and

South Dakota state lines on Highway 81 crossing the

Missouri River into Yankton, S.D. The overall length

of the bore was 2,200 feet, with underwater depths

reaching up to 60 feet.

“Great Plains Communications is a forward

thinking company that is able to get carriers and

business customers where they need to go by

creating unique routes. Boring across the Missouri

River is an example of that forward thinking

philosophy,” said Todd Foje, CEO of Great Plains

Communications.

“This expansion will help stimulate the economy

of both Nebraska and South Dakota,” Foje

continued. “It will also allow Great Plains Commu-

nications to offer increased capacity to carrier and

wholesale customers wishing to expand their pres-

ence and reach new destinations, such as South

Dakota and Minnesota.”

The 5,000-mile Great Plains Communications

network encompasses the state of Nebraska and

extends throughout the upper Midwest with a

multi-state reach.

The company specializes in lit buildings and

custom builds with more than 90 wire centers

and interconnections with carriers at the major

points of presence in Denver, Minneapolis and

Omaha, Neb.

Great Plains Communications offers flexible

solutions from design through deployment. Its self-

healing, diverse network provides services from

low-end switched Ethernet up to multiple 100G.

At the core of Great Plains Communications

service is its extensive, 5,000-mile regional fiber

network with community access rings, last- and

middle-mile solutions.

The network reach extends beyond Nebraska into

Colorado, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, South Dakota and

Wyoming and is supported by an around-the-clock

network operations center.

Great Plains Communications is financially strong

with a 105-year history of providing reliable and

innovative solutions. It prides itself on a progressive

approach to accommodating the needs of all regional

and national telecommunications carriers, LECs, ISPs,

wireless carriers and other service providers using

custom engineering and custom build strategies.
