Big Changes in Communications Business

Markets Since 1996

an Act

U

.S. business and consumer markets

have changed dramatically since

passage of the Telecommunica-

tions Act of 1996, the biggest revi-

sion of U.S. telecommunications

framework since the 1934 Com-

munications Act, and more far-reaching than the 1984

breakup of the AT&T system.

Perhaps a notable example is the fact that total tele-

communications revenue has nearly doubled since 1996.

If you are in the business customer segment, that doesn’t

necessarily sound right.
