segments of the business in North
America and some other countries, but now
is becoming a potentially bigger development
in Europe as well. Where cable operators are
active, they often have become the most-suc-
cessful new competitors to incumbent telcos.
Cable operators in the 28-nation European
Union made 21.5 billion euros ($22.8 billion)
in 2014 revenues, with half from broadband
and telephony, according to Cable Europe.
Telcos, on the other hand, have experienced a
five-year decline in sales, and losses to cable
operators are part of the reason. Revenue
earned by European telcos fell 11 percent to
€248 billion ($273 billion) from 2009 to 2015,
