DE-CIX Dallas Interconnection Platform Achieves 1Tbps Peak Traffic

Internet Exchange (IX) operator DE-CIX announced that it achieved a new peak traffic record of more than 1Tbps (Terabit per second) on its Dallas-based, multi-service interconnection platform. The achievement was recorded at 8:10 PM CT, and coincided with the NFL playoffs. This milestone is equivalent to simultaneously streaming of over 330,000 HD videos per second, and underscores rapid regional digital growth alongside increasing reliance on robust internet infrastructure.

Overall peak traffic at DE-CIX Dallas has risen by 61 percent since the beginning of 2023, and 194 percent since early 2022.

DE-CIX Dallas is now the fifth DE-CIX exchange, worldwide, to cross 1TB of peak traffic, following DE-CIX installations in Frankfurt, Germany; New York, N.Y., U.S.; Madrid, Spain and Mumbai, India. The new peak, DE-CIX noted, coincides with rapid economic growth in the state of Texas, as well as the potential of its digital economy.

The recent surge in traffic was explained by recent increases in sporting event live-streaming, plus the relocation of businesses to the Dallas area that support increased traffic from Latin America, and in particular Mexico, as well as a general move to cloud-based operations for Dallas businesses.

“Neutrality and an open access model have been the bedrock of our success, not just in Dallas but across our global footprint,” said VP, North America, Ed d’Agostino. “Our unwavering commitment to these principles ensures that we provide an equitable platform for all players in the digital ecosystem. By forging strategic partnerships with data centers and transport network operators, we’re not only expanding the reach of our platform but also ensuring that regional networks can connect seamlessly. This collaborative approach has been instrumental in driving the rapid growth and resilience of our IX in the region, reflecting the dynamic and interconnected world we live in today.”

DE-CIX Dallas is the largest carrier and data center neutral IX serving the Southwest, and ranks among the top 15 largest in the country. It connects nearly 150 networks. These include carriers, ISPs, content providers, cloud service providers, enterprises and other networks, optimizing content delivery at the edge. The interconnection platform, accessible from over 15 different data centers and colocation facilities, offers direct access to cloud service providers such as AWS, Google Cloud and Microsoft Azure, including the Microsoft Azure Peering Service (MAPS).

Beyond local connectivity, the platform extends its reach to North American cities such as New York, Chicago, Richmond, Phoenix and – as of 2024 – Mexico City and Queretaro, in addition to connecting thousands of global networks across Europe and the Middle East.
