Hibernia Adds Security for Undersea Internet Link

Hibernia Networks has introduced Border Gateway Protocol Flow Specification (BGP Flowspec) for its  IP Transit services, to protect its wholesale customers.

BGP Flowspec provides network operators and enterprise customers a tool enabling them to more quickly address distributed denial of service (DDoS) threats. The enhanced DDoS mitigation solution allows customers to save valuable time between the identification of an attack and the implementation of remediation schemes. BGP Flowspec’s ability to take a surgical approach to traffic filtering, through the Network Layer Reachability Information (NLRI) functionality, enables the identification of specific traffic flows that should be discarded as a component of a DDoS attack.

“Given the number of threat vectors on the Internet, it’s absolutely essential that carriers and enterprise customers have the latest in DDoS mitigation capabilities in today’s environment,” said Al DiGabriele, senior vice president of product management and marketing at Hibernia. “Hibernia Networks’ IP Transit customers gain a more effective and precise security response tool with BGP Flowspec.”

An additional advantage of this enhanced DDoS mitigation solution is that it does not require the complete shut-down of traffic that typically occurs when a “black-hole” response is applied, due to its ability to isolate specific IP addresses and remediate in a more targeted manner. This technique enables both network operators and enterprise customers to continue serving their end users while they fend off malicious traffic.
