Parallel Wireless, Inc., the U.S.-based Open RAN company that provides an all-G, cloud-native Open RAN solution, announced Millicom selected it as a strategic partner to deliver O-RAN-compatible networks in Latin America to enable 4G.
Millicom is a provider of cable and cellular services to emerging markets, primarily in Latin America, with nearly 55 million cellular customers. The company claims to be the leading provider of high-speed broadband and innovations and support through its main brand TIGO.
Today there are many rural locations across Colombia that do not have mobile broadband. In the first phase of the partnership, Parallel Wireless will provide O-RAN-compliant Open RAN solutions using the 700 MHz spectrum, enabling broadband connectivity that is vital to the region’s economic development.
4G networks will enable services such as e-learning, digital banking and video streaming, and provide the infrastructure necessary to connect millions of citizens, thereby contributing to Colombia’s gross domestic product growth.
As the primary systems integrator, Parallel Wireless will provide end-to-end solutions including installation and integration and network monitoring services, demonstrating strong network performance and exceeding key performance indicators (KPIs).
By working with Parallel Wireless, Millicom will be able to grow and expand cellular networks and offer customers in Latin America next-generation digital services:
- Development of an O-RAN-compatible, cloud-based, 5G-capable, world-class Open-RAN network based on the powerful, distributed architecture of Parallel Wireless
- Improve service agility and reduce the total TCO across geographically dispersed locations through the introduction of RAN automation
- Use of the technical know-how of Parallel Wireless and its system integrator partners in the construction and management of cellular sites
