ScaleMatrix has announced a geographic expansion of its future-proof, DDC enabled colocation footprint to Charlotte, North Carolina, through a strategic partnership with TierPoint.
ScaleMatrix’ flagship headquarters in Southern California opened in 2012 and was the first site in the U.S. to exclusively deploy the company’s Dynamic Density Control (DDC) cabinet technology, which allows clients the freedom to deploy any hardware configuration, without limitations on power density (DDC cabinets scale between 0 – 52kW dynamically), cooling, airflow volume, or server depth. In addition, with this technology deployed, ScaleMatrix sites support any deployment size, from a single high-density server, to large, multi-megawatt application platforms, without the additional set-up time or data center re-configuration costs that traditionally accompany higher-density deployments. This dynamic resource management allows clients to install hardware or add additional cabinets to their deployment at any time, regardless of the density or configuration requirements.
ScaleMatrix has seen a significant increase in demand for variable and high-density colocation, as well as high-performance cloud and application hosting services, from consumers making use of Analytics, AI, High Performance Computing (HPC), IoT, and 5G technologies. In early 2018, with client demand driving the need for geographic expansion, ScaleMatrix began reviewing East Coast locations and partners that had the necessary resources and characteristics to support these evolving requirements.
Ultimately, ScaleMatrix elected to partner with industry leader TierPoint, in its Charlotte – Center Park data center facility, to bring the variable density, high-performance capabilities of the DDC cabinet platform to market on the East Coast. The partnership was formed with nearly 1MW of client requirements in hand, primarily driven by cloud hosting providers and users of advanced Artificial Intelligence (AI) platforms that readily push the cooling and deployment capabilities of traditional data centers.
“Our clients today are leveraging the unique capabilities of our data centers and cloud platforms to realize real strategic advantages for their businesses,” said Chris Orlando, CEO of ScaleMatrix. “With their needs growing exponentially, expanding our future-proof colocation platform across the U.S. was a required next-step. We are elated to have chosen Charlotte as our next point-of-presence for DDC, as the location, utility rates, connectivity, and technical climate make it an ideal home for our growing base of users. We chose TierPoint as a partner for this critical expansion project based on their technical data center acumen, expansive resources, national data center footprint, and forward-thinking management team, who believed in our vision of where the future of the data center industry is headed. We couldn’t be happier with our choice of location or partner.”
“We’re honored to partner with Scale Matrix on their East Coast deployment and excited about the opportunities created by their DDC technology,” said Keith Markley, executive vice president of data center operations at TierPoint. “The effectiveness of this technology – and the flexibility it provides clients – is remarkable. A customer could install 5kW in a cabinet one day, then come in the next week and load up to 30kW without any changes to the infrastructure. The DDC system adjusts to the new load and maintains the same level of efficiency.”
With workloads in analytics, AI, and enterprise HPC evolving rapidly, companies are looking beyond their next hardware refresh to help ensure that their chosen data center partner, and overall technology runway, will support their needs today and into the future. While migrations to the cloud have had a dramatic impact on today’s IT landscape, the shift to hybrid-everything is here to stay, with enterprise and HPC workloads being intelligently managed between on-premises, colocation, and cloud sites. ScaleMatrix’ growing footprint of future-proof, DDC-enabled data centers, and high-performance cloud services, provide the agility, security, and capabilities required to support the changing needs of enterprise IT.
ScaleMatrix, in partnership with TierPoint, opened this new East Coast location on September 14, in record time, due to critical timelines associated with one of the anchor tenant deployments. This rapid deployment was made possible due to the strength of the TierPoint data center teams, in addition to the simple yet powerful capabilities of the DDC platform, which eliminates the complexity and elongated construction timelines associated with traditional data center expansion and build-out efforts.
