Cable Unveils ‘Gigasphere’ Services

The cable industry is upping its broadband awareness efforts. As a community, it has agreed to adopt “Gigasphere” as the public name to represent the next generation broadband Internet technology.

The brand name will refer to services delivered using the all-IP DOCSIS 3.1 standard being developed by CableLabs. The implication, of course, is that the speeds for business and consumer broadband will be in the 1Gbps territory and above.

Gigasphere will be used by member companies of the National Cable & Telecommunications Association (NCTA), in collaboration with the Cable & Telecommunications Association for Marketing (CTAM), CableLabs and Cable Europe.

“As we transition to faster and better broadband enabled by this new technology, we must help consumers understand its potential to dramatically enhance our communities, our world and our lives,” said Michael Powell, former FCC chief and president/CEO of NCTA. “Gigasphere stands for incredibly fast access to the Web, the world, and the things that matter most to broadband users. It breathes life into the breadth, scope, scale, opportunity, and impact of this next-generation technology.”
