DE-CIX, SwissIX Modernize Swiss Internet Exchange

DE-CIX, an operator of internet exchanges (IXs), and SwissIX, the operator of the largest IX in Switzerland, have upgraded the technology of the Swiss Internet Exchange. For this purpose, the 220 networks connected to SwissIX were migrated to the DE-CIX Apollon platform.

As a non-profit association, SwissIX is characterized by a neutral peering network, which is distributed over seven data centers in Switzerland. The migration took place during ongoing operations in overnight maintenance windows to keep the impact on customers as low as possible.

Beyond the migration, DE-CIX is responsible for technical operations, such as maintenance, upkeep and further development of the SwissIX interconnection platform. This includes technical customer support and provisioning, whereas the business management and marketing of SwissIX will remain with the association.

DE-CIX operates a total of six IXs in Germany in different regions and partly in partnership models with local providers. The German IXs include DE-CIX Frankfurt, the largest IX in Europe, with peak data throughput of more than 14 terabits per second.

The DE-CIX platform is accessible from more than 250 German data centers and offers easy access to modern interconnection services. Globally, at around 50 locations worldwide, DE-CIX connects thousands of network operators (carriers), internet service providers (ISPs), content providers and content delivery networks (CDNs), and corporate networks from more than 100 countries and offers peering, cloud connectivity and other interconnection services.

Together, the DE-CIX IXs form the world’s largest neutral interconnection ecosystem, with a connected customer capacity of around 130 terabits.
