Optelian CTO to Present on the Evolution of Switching

Sheldon Walklin, CTO at intuitive packet optical networking solution provider Optelian, will participate in an interactive panel session on the evolution of switching next week.

The panel will investigate the key question of how switching will evolve. Some of the possibilities that will be explored include ROADMs, OTNs, or packet switching. These options will be evaluated in terms of cost, flexibility relation and customer requirements. This group of experts will also focus on quantifying the benefit of integrating OTN switching, incorporating GMPLS control plane intelligence and what SDN means for the emerging converged optical transport layer with integrated switching.

“I am very much looking forward to exploring the many facets of this important issue with my colleagues,” said Walklin. “Switching is certainly a feature of our industry that has seen a variety of exciting advances and I think this panel will help us all further establish how we approach these changes.”

Walklin, who joined Optelian in 2006, has served as CTO of the company since 2010. He oversees key aspects of Optelian’s research and development activities, while also providing long-term vision and strategy at the executive level of the corporation. He has nearly 20 years of experience in optical communications, more than 10 years as a senior designer in product and more than five years in an industry-focused research environment.

The WDM & Next Generation Optical Networking USA conference will take place at Hilton Doubletree Campbell Centre in Dallas on October 8 and 9. The panel is Wednesday, October 9 from 11:20 – 11:50 a.m.
