WISP Market Snapshot: Vitelity Highlights Voice as a Differentiator

Wireless ISPs once found themselves making a market from providing low-cost vanilla broadband to the rural and underserved market—areas where other the local LEC wasn’t upgrading its copper plant and where other broadband providers simply didn’t see an ROI case for building out fiber or cable. Now, though, WISPs are seeing access encroachment—and are needing to add voice and other services in order to hang onto their market.

“We have been hearing over and over that WISPs are now having to compete with big national carriers—cable companies and CLEcs—that are starting to encroach on their underserved markets,” said  Scott Navratil, vice president of operations at Vitelity. “And we can give them access to voice and other related services– E911, white pages, yellow pages, residential Voip, hosted cloud PBX—that they can’t get anywhere else.”

Vitelity, which is one of the largest DID IP trunking aggregator in the United States, offers VoIP options to the wireless ISP market so that they can get access to a digital voice product to compete with other triple-play operators. The company is especially highlighting its new smartDID product, which includes 411 directory assistance listings, e911, white/yellow page listings, outbound CNAM/LiDB listings, voicemail transcription and SMS.

Vitelity also offers a fax product, which Navratil said was also very popular with the WISP set. “There are regulatory issues for some industries in using e-mail or other forms of sharing documents,” he explained. “Especially title companies, real estate brokers, doctors—in many verticals the only non-original copy that is recognized by the court is a fax. So these guys say to me, ‘hey we need that’ and we can provide it.”

Overall, the market is beginning to morph into something much bigger than naked pipes. “The WISP Association used to be a small little section of ISPCON,” Navratil said. “I’m amazed with how big this has become—it’s just blowing up. The sheer technology being offered is allowing the market to expand. Broadband speeds are up, the quality of service is up, and there’s a real mix of service options available to them. So there’s a staggering amount of growth, even though competition is increasing.”
