Windstream Expands Charlotte Fiber Network

Windstream Communications has built out its fiber network in the Charlotte, N.C., area, marking its first in a series of nationwide network expansions planned for 2016. The company’s expansion connects its high-speed nationwide fiber network with local data centers and commercial buildings in SouthPark, uptown and the University area, Windstream said in a statement Tuesday.

Mid-market business customers will be able to use its data, voice, network and cloud services thanks to the expansion, Windstream added.

“This network infrastructure makes the Queen City one of the best-connected cities in the country. This is a big, ambitious project that will have a major economic impact on Charlotte,” said Eric Warren, regional president of enterprise sales for Windstream’s south region.

Windstream’s update comes as competition is heating up to provide the Charlotte area with high-speed service. Google Fiber is in the process of rolling out its fiber network locally, and AT&T and also have been rolling out faster speeds in the city.
